2024 Quality Summit
Quality department personnel gather in Cleveland, OH to learn, network and recognize the Quality Manager of the Year!
In May, we held the 2024 Quality Summit in Cleveland, OH. More than 20 attendees joined the weeklong event that included the following:
- Guest speakers: Michael Siegal, Executive Chairman, and Rick Marabito, CEO
- Quality equipment demonstrations from our vendors
- Fabrication overview with Max Fitzgerald, Vice President – Fabrication
- Mill tour, including the galvanizing process
- Training: welding and measurement system analysis (MSA)
- Team trip to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame
In addition to the extensive training and education throughout the week, the highlight of the event was announcing our Quality Manager of the Year – Machelle Hasseler!
Coady Barrie, Olympic Steel’s Corporate Quality Manager, says this about Machelle’s nomination. “Machelle embodies our Core Values. She is committed to Quality and is a role model for continuous improvement. She is the definition of a team player, swiftly responding to Quality Team inquiries and consistently providing personal development opportunities for her team.”
To receive the Quality Manager of the Year Award, a Quality Manager is nominated by their peers and their performance (and their department’s performance) is scored based on the following criteria:
- Quality Management System compliance
- PM Quality objective (on-time delivery, tons accepted, PPM)
- Quality project completion
- Communication
- Continuous improvement
- Divisional and organizational (quality team) collaboration
- Customer, supervisory and supplier interactions
- Employee development
- Corrective action
In addition to this review, the nominee, their General Manager, Plant Manager, Sales Manager and any employees who report to the Quality Manager are interviewed. This year there were three nominees who completed this rigorous process, and Machelle received the highest score and this year’s title of Quality Manager of the Year! What an honor – congratulations, Machelle!
