Cyndi Marshall

Business Solutions Manager – SEMS, Olympic Steel, Bedford Heights, OH

Pragmatic problem solver. Focuses on the team’s success. Believes there’s always something more to learn.

Nearly 30 years ago, Cyndi Marshall began her career with Olympic Steel in the accounts payable department. She participated in a few system-related projects within the accounting department that led to an opportunity in the IT department as a Systems Trainer, then Business Analyst, Business Solutions Manager for AX, and currently – Business Solutions Manager for SEMS.

Cyndi says, “You can learn a lot about the business by processing invoices, if you are curious and ask questions. An entry-level accounts payable job taught me about inventory and operations, and I’ve used that knowledge to build a career in Information Technology.”

As a continuous learner who never stops absorbing, Cyndi says her greatest contribution to the Company is the culmination of everything she’s learned and done, locally and at the divisions. “My role is a nice blend of applying what I know and using technology to support the business and help us grow,” says Cyndi.

She credits the people she’s worked with over the years for her professional development. Cyndi says, “People recognized my talents and identified areas where I could most benefit the company and my career. Dan Hawk [Director of Accounting – Flat Rolled] and Chris Garrett [VP – Information Systems] have been big supporters of mine, appreciating that I want to learn more, and they gave me the opportunity to do so.”

Dan Hawk says this about Cyndi: “Through her hard work and dedication, she has grown into one of the most respected and trusted members of the IT department. She is the go-to person for technical questions and always has an answer or will ask others for an answer if she doesn’t know. She is dedicated and committed to the Company’s success and it’s evident in all of her interactions.”

The variety of tasks and challenges for the IT team is what makes Cyndi happy to come to work each day. “There is always a new problem that needs a solution. My team and I know which tasks are most impactful to the business and we focus on those tasks – working together to find the best possible solution,” she says, adding that “becoming a mom helped me learn to focus and prioritize my time, zeroing in on what’s most important.”

Cyndi’s love of learning is a critical part of her success, and her advice to others on how to build a great career: “Be open to new challenges! Never stop learning and don’t be afraid to try new things because everything is a potential new career path.”
