DEI Council Member Spotlight - Tammy Newman

A member of our Training and Education Committee, Tammy is a passionate advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion.

In 2023, Olympic Steel reached a significant milestone in our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion(DEI) efforts by establishing employee run DEI Council Sub-Committees. These individuals volunteered to take part in this work, in addition to their regular job duties, because they each wanted to make a positive impact on our Company.

Each month, we’ll give you the opportunity to learn a little bit more about the individuals helping to strengthen Olympic Steel’s culture. Last month we featured Elvira Mendez from McCullough Industries and this month…

A:  I absolutely love fashion; attending a fashion show in Milan, Italy is on my bucket list.

Q:  When it comes to work, what’s your superpower? What special skill do you offer to support your co-workers/team?

A:  I have the ability to always be the voice of reason and find solutions by thinking outside-the-box.

Q:  What motivated you to become a DEI Council Member?

A:  I strongly believe that everyone should have the same opportunities regardless of race, color, or creed and being part of the DEI Council helps me contribute to the Company's efforts in this area.

Q:  What’s your favorite thing about being an Olympic Steel employee?

A:  The family-oriented work atmosphere and the long tenure of many employees.

Q:  In your opinion, what's a simple action everyone can take to make our Company a   welcoming workplace?

A:  Be empathetic.

Q:  What cultural/heritage celebration or tradition holds special meaning for you? Mind sharing why?

A:  Juneteenth, MLK Day, Black History Month, Christmas, Easter. Religious holidays and celebrations that pay homage to Black Americans are definitely dear and true to my heart. Even though society has made tons of progress in attempting to show equality there is still a significant way to go when it comes to opportunities, and biases in general.
