Katie Vargo

Slitter Operator, Minneapolis, MN

Focused on the future. Eagerly takes the lead. Accepts every opportunity to have a positive impact.

Katie Vargo began her career at Olympic Steel’s Minneapolis Coil division almost ten years ago. She enjoyed working in the woodshop on third shift; it was a way to work hard with few interruptions. During this time, she took advantage of every opportunity to learn more. Whether operating a crane, other machinery or learning about the kitting process, she absorbed as much as she could to increase her knowledge of the business and her ability to make an impact. After a move to second shift to operate the Rowe leveling line, she’s now on first shift as a Slitter Operator.

Finding ways to get more involved is what sets Katie apart. In addition to learning the six jobs she’s had in her almost 10 years at Olympic Steel, she’s also been a member of the Safety Committee for more than half of those years, and she completed the Olympic Steel Certified Trainer program. As a Certified Trainer, she establishes job training modules for new hires to help them safely and efficiently learn how to do their job.

“I’m proud to be a part of the training program. I like being involved in the process that helps our new hires succeed,” explains Katie. “It’s a Company-wide program that involves a lot of different people, and it’s helped me stand out.”

She may describe herself as a shy person, but Katie doesn’t shy away from opportunities to learn and grow. She’s honest with her supervisors about advancing her career, and she frequently initiates those conversations. “They’ve been supportive of my choices and have helped guide me to the next level,” Katie says, crediting her supervisors’ support as what’s helped her most during her Olympic Steel career.

“Katie is an exceptional representative of Olympic Steel. She is the first person to volunteer whenever help is needed, or when a committee is seeking representation. Katie is a leader,” explains Travis Paukert, Plant Manager for the Minneapolis Coil division. “She always has a positive attitude and makes the best of every situation. We are lucky to have her on our team.”

Jumping in and getting the job done is what makes Katie happy to come to work each day. She explains, “I like the challenge of finding a way to make things work. I set goals and work hard to accomplish them. It helps that I have a great crew to work with – and that I’m able to leave my work at work!”

Katie is staying focused on the future and her success. While her interests may change over the years, one thing always remains the same – she’s driven to succeed in all that she does and is eager to help others achieve their goals, too.

What’s her advice for those who also want to build a strong career with Olympic Steel?

She says, “Always take advantage of the opportunities you’re given.”
