Kevin Betcher, Truck Driver, Bettendorf, IA

When unexpected challenges arise, you sometimes have to go a little out of your comfort zone to solve the problem.

On a cold day in January, the temperature was well below zero when truck driver Kevin Betcher was returning from a delivery. About 70 miles from the factory, the truck’s fuel filter clogged — a result of the extreme cold.

Kevin called roadside rescue, but they were assisting other trucks and could not dispatch a crew for several hours. Instead of giving up and getting a hotel for the night, Kevin purchased a new fuel filter and wrench and replaced the truck’s filter with a wind chill factor of -50 degrees whipping around him. He was back at the factory that night with no impact to his truck or the next days’ scheduled deliveries. When the same thing happened two more times during the winter and to other trucks, Kevin drove out to the trucks, made the necessary repairs and got them back on the road to make their deliveries.

Lesson Learned: When unexpected challenges arise, you sometimes have to go a little out of your comfort zone to solve the problem.
