McCullough Industries, based in Kenton, Ohio, is a manufacturer of self-dumping hoppers (think small dumpsters or metal boxes) and other material handling products made in the USA.
HISTORY
McCullough Industries was founded in 1965 by Wright McCullough in Kenton, Ohio. It began as a 10,000 square foot machine shop that fabricated gears and other parts for industrial equipment and the automotive industry. In the mid-1980s, Steve McCullough, Wright’s son, purchased the business and shifted the company’s focus to fabrication and manufacturing of industrial hoppers. He led McCullough Industries until Olympic Steel acquired the business in January of 2019, the first piece of our metal-intensive branded products portfolio.
From the beginning, McCullough Industries produced a rugged, steel container used to safely store, transport and dump materials – the Wright® branded hopper, named after the founder. In 2010, they began partnering with a few larger catalog distributors and saw their size and revenue increase substantially. By 2018, they were no longer a small, local company and their annual revenue reached more than $10 million. In the 4 years since the acquisition, McCullough Industries has essentially doubled in business, reaching more than $20 million in annual revenue, making the move from producing approximately 55 hoppers a day to nearly 100 a day in a 75,000 square foot facility.
McCullough Industries is a big part of the small town of Kenton, OH. Since the beginning, they’ve supported local youth leagues, the Hardin County Fair and other groups and organizations as they’re able. As an Olympic Steel Company, McCullough Industries is still extremely active in the community – putting our Core Values into action. They regularly support Kenton High School, Ridgemont High School, the Hardin County Fair and many other local non-profit organizations with cash and in-kind donations, as well as volunteer participation.
PRODUCTS
McCullough Industries is known for its self-dumping hoppers. They are made of sturdy welded steel and designed for heavy-duty forklift handling. Self-dumping hoppers offer a safer, more efficient way to move and store material by reducing risk to the forklift operator and exposure to potentially hazardous materials. Their product line, available in stainless or carbon models, includes bump release hoppers that automatically dump on contact with the roll-off container and are divided into four major product categories: the standard self-dumping hopper, the low-profile hopper, the bump-release hopper and the quick attach. The bump-release and quick attach products were developed after McCullough Industries became an Olympic Steel Company.
Wright® hoppers are used for a variety of applications – to hold recycling or waste, industrial or construction materials, outdoor or organic matter, or production and manufacturing materials or scrap. They come in many sizes and offer accessories and customization for virtually any application.
The products McCullough Industries produces support many industries, including manufacturing and construction, restaurants, kitchens and food service, schools and universities, hospitals and medical centers, sports and recreation facilities, farming and agriculture, and government facilities. While you’ll see Wright® hoppers in Olympic Steel divisions, you may also spot one at: Disney World; Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins; Arrowhead Stadium, home to the Kansas City Chiefs; or even the White House in Washington, D.C.
