Supply Chain Manager – Specialty Metals, Bedford Heights, OH
From Intern to Supply Chain Manager. Energized by teamwork. Believes accepting new opportunities is key to your success.
In 2008, as a sophomore in college, Matt Pinto started his career as an Intern at Olympic Steel in the Corporate Accounting Department. Two years later, upon graduation, Matt returned to Olympic Steel in a full-time Accounting position. He was a member of the Corporate Accounting team for five years, before moving to the Specialty Metals group with a promotion to Controller for the Streetsboro, OH and Schaumburg, IL divisions. In 2017, he moved back to the Corporate office with the Specialty Metals group in the Supply Chain side of the business. Today, Matt is the Supply Chain Manager for Specialty Metals, a position he’s held since June 2019.
Matt has worked at several divisions and in various roles in the past decade. He says, “I’m proud of the progression I’ve made throughout my career – starting as an Intern and holding many roles within the organization. Seeing the growth with our business segment, knowing I’ve been part of the team that’s made that happen – I’m really proud of that.”
“Matt is a company-first employee,” says Andy Markowitz, President – Specialty Metals. “He strives to bring new ideas to the table and streamline processes. His career path with the Company – from Intern to Supply Chain Manager, Specialty Metals – shows he’s successful, but it’s his unwavering dedication to his job, his team and the Company that sets him apart.”
He credits the support he has received from his mentors, and others who have helped him throughout his career, for much of his success. “Olympic Steel has a culture that encourages growth and development. I’ve been fortunate to have worked with so many people who were willing to help and provide answers to questions,” he explains. “I try to take advantage of that and learn from the people who have been here longer than I have – the people who have a lot of experience in the industry.”
Matt adds his own perspective and understanding to the advice he’s received over the years to help him tackle challenges. He says, “Early in my career, learning from those around me was key to overcoming obstacles. Now I rely on my own experiences and knowledge to help me work through issues and to help my team reach their goals.”
In the summer of 2021, Matt drew from his own Olympic Steel internship to mentor and guide a promising Supply Chain Intern. Bringing his background full circle, Matt helped the intern develop a daily scorecard that’s used to track supply chain trends. As a result of Matt’s mentoring, Will Taylor will be joining Olympic Steel this summer.
Working with his team is what makes Matt happy to come to work each day. “Being part of a fun, energetic, driven team – helping each other solve problems and pulling for each other in the same direction – motivates me,” he says.
Matt believes being open to new experiences is the key to his success and it’s his advice to anyone looking to join the Company. “Don’t be afraid to take on new responsibilities,” Matt says. “Olympic does a great job providing different avenues to succeed; be vocal about your needs and be open to the opportunities available to you.”
