Two welders at McCullough Industries, Gabe Heilman and Derick Hodge, often have to weld together bowed edges of steel to produce a hopper. After a few discussions, Gabe came up with the idea of using a heavy-duty c-clamp, and Derick made the idea come to life. Completing this project resulted in a reduced risk to injury because they no longer need to weld on an angle. The solution also improved efficiency (gaining one hopper per day) and improved quality by producing a stronger weld with no gaps.

Lesson Learned:

A challenge you’re facing in a process might be a sign that there’s a better way to get the job done. Take some time to discuss the issue and possible solutions with a team of people who could help you look at the situation from every angle.
