OneDrive – What is It?

OneDrive is an internet-based storage service that allows you to store files securely and access them virtually anywhere.

OneDrive is an internet-based storage service for anyone with a Microsoft account. Basically, it’s a hard drive in the cloud, that you can share.

It allows you to store your files securely in one place and access them virtually anywhere. You simply log in to OneDrive with your Microsoft account to access your data.

It works like a hard drive, but it’s available through the internet with additional features. These features are the reasons why you may want to use OneDrive.

  • It works across devices and platforms. You can create a file on one device and pick up where you left off on another device without having to save a copy on a flash drive or email it to yourself.
  • It’s easy to share files. You can share files or folders that are stored in OneDrive by simply sharing a link to the file or folder.
  • Real-time collaboration. Like the other O365 apps, OneDrive allows you to share and work on files at the same time.
  • Data recovery. Since the data is in the cloud, OneDrive works as a data recovery mechanism if your device breaks or gets stolen – you simply log in from another device to access your files.
  • Available on multiple platforms. OneDrive works with Apple and Android systems.
  • Data syncs automatically. OneDrive syncs data among computers, phones and tablets that are set up using the same Microsoft account as soon as you connect to a network. So, if you change a OneDrive file on your iPad, when you save it, the modified file is put in your OneDrive storage and available to all other devices with access to the file.

Try it out for yourself by going to OSSIE and clicking on the icon in the upper left-hand corner of the page (referred to as the ‘waffle’) to launch OneDrive and the other O365 applications. Or, from your personal device, go to onedrive.live.com, click the ‘sign up for free’ button, create a new email address and continue with the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
