Pedro Bruno

Operations Manager, Milford, CT

Started as a Shop Helper. Earned his degree with Olympic Steel. Took the lead in his own career planning.

Fourteen years ago, Pedro Bruno, started his career with Olympic Steel as a Shop Helper in our Milford, CT division. Over the next eight years, he worked as a Machine Operator and in Maintenance. With that experience, Pedro initiated a conversation with Management about the future of his career path – he wanted more.

With a plan in place and the determination to stay on that path, Pedro worked toward earning his undergraduate degree while gaining valuable experience in Sales and Operations Management, specifically in Inside Sales for Specialty Metals and Outside Sales (in Connecticut and Rhode Island), as the Plant Manager and, now, as Operations Manager.

Pedro is proud of the opportunity to grow with Olympic Steel and thankful for the tuition reimbursement program and Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) classes that helped get him ready for management. He says, “I’ve always been fortunate to have great leaders in my corner whose support and encouragement provided a solid foundation and helped me develop into who I am today.”

Pedro comes to work happy each day, because he’s able to have a positive impact on other people’s lives through the decisions he makes and the way he manages the Milford operations. Whether it’s upgrading equipment or mentoring employees who want to grow with the Company, he knows he can positively influence an employee’s experience at work, and that means he has the ability to also have a positive impact on their life outside of work, too.

“Pedro effectively demonstrates Olympic Steel’s Core Values in his management style working with his team members every day. His varied background spans both Production and Sales positions at all levels, making him uniquely qualified for his current role as Operations Manager.” says Gerry Phillips, General Manager at Olympic Steel’s Milford, CT division. “A key component of his success is attributable to his strong work ethic consistently woven throughout all his accomplishments. He sets an amazing example by multi-tasking without letting anything detract from his performance.”

It comes as no surprise that Pedro’s advice to those who are trying to build a successful career with the Company is to challenge yourself and don’t be afraid to start important conversations with your Supervisor about your career path. “We have a lot of resources available locally and across the Company to help develop our skills and expertise,” explains Pedro. “Working just outside of my comfort zone keeps me motivated to learn more and accomplish more – for myself, my coworkers and Olympic Steel.”
