When Sonya Malvick needed help to rescue a pup in a nearby state, she reached out to a new Olympic Steel team member who helped save the day!

Sonya Malvick, Senior Outside Sales Representative in Wisconsin, is passionate about working with the Upper Midwest Great Dane Rescue (UMGDR). Late last month, she received a call about a pup in Michigan who needed to be rehomed. Not being able to drive to Michigan to retrieve the pup herself, she reached out to a new coworker who lives in Michigan to ask if he would help.

Here’s the story from Sonya:

Late on January 22, we [UMGDR] received notice of a family with a new puppy, Scooby, who could no longer afford food and had stopped feeding him. Scooby was located in Michigan and this was not in the UMGDR’s area, so we didn’t have any volunteers to call. We posted our plea on social media for someone who could pick up Scooby from the home, but didn’t find anyone.

I recalled that we hired a new Outside Sales Representative for Michigan, Steve Eipper, and wondered if he’d be willing to help. I hadn’t formally met him yet, so I was going out on a limb. I called him, introduced myself, explained the situation…and he didn’t hesitate to help.

The next morning, Steve and his wife purchased food and supplies for Scooby and headed to the home to save him. They kept him until a volunteer from the Chicago area could drive up to get him.

This is a great example of living our Core Values, showing us that small acts of kindness can have a big impact on more than the people involved.

Sonya was moved by this event saying, “Life is challenging these days for everyone and rescue has been extremely tough because people just don’t have the means to care for animals. I could not believe that someone who didn’t even know me, other than being my coworker, was willing to drop everything to help. It shows how great our team is and reflects the character of the people working for Olympic Steel.”
