Preventive care is routine healthcare that’s meant to help you stay healthy by keeping an eye out for potential issues before they become serious, or even life-threatening, problems. Preventive care is generally focused on the following:
- Evaluating your health when you are symptom-free
- Offering routine checkups and screenings
- Decreasing the risk of developing health issues, even if you are in the best shape of your life
This type of care is important because regular visits or screenings may help identify potential health risks for early diagnosis and treatment. Preventive care is different for children and adults.
During your annual wellness visit, you and your doctor work together to choose the care that’s right for you. Recommended preventive care services for adults may include the following.
- Cancer screenings at appropriate age
- Diabetes screenings from ages 40-70 years old
- Mammography, colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy screenings
- Tobacco cessation, screening and behavioral counseling for adults who smoke
- Well-woman visits, including routine prenatal visits
Recommended preventive care services for children vary based on age and may include the following:
- Age-appropriate well-child exam
- Developmental screening for children under three years old
- Fluoride application for children under six years old
- Vaccines and immunizations
