Wendy Gunter

Go-to team member. Believes details make the difference. Consistently brings value to the day.

“Don’t just show up – bring value to the day.”

That’s not just advice from Wendy Gunter, Service & Scheduling Manager at Olympic Steel’s Buford and Winder, GA locations, it’s how she operates every day by paying attention to the details, communicating clearly, helping others and understanding her role as it contributes to the bigger picture. In 1988, she started her metals career at Southeastern Metal Processing. In 1997, Olympic Steel acquired Southeastern Metal Processing, and she officially became an Olympic Steel employee. Since then, she’s worked as Receptionist, Administration, Payroll, Sales, Toll Processing and, most recently, Service and Scheduling.

“Being in all those departments helped me understand how they are tied together,” Wendy says. The varied experience, especially in her position as Service and Scheduling Manager, has given her the opportunity to have a big impact on the division through training and coaching across all departments.

She says, “Training is the best investment in time – learning the basics to the more detailed – it’s all important.” Wendy credits her managers who have pushed her outside of her comfort zone to allow her to grow and figure things out. “Making mistakes and learning from them is the very best teacher,” she says.

Wendy describes herself as a problem-solver, so it’s no surprise that she finds joy in simply being part of the process each day. “I enjoy seeing the material processed and shipped out the door,” she explains. “Knowing customers are getting what they want, watching our division grow and seeing that process – being part of that process – it makes me happy.”

“Wendy is a tireless worker who is focused on the success of the Company,” says Dave Gea, President – Carbon Flat Rolled (formerly Regional Vice President and the General Manager for the Buford and Winder, GA divisions). “She goes above and beyond, working with other departments to achieve targeted objectives and goals for the benefit of the division. She approaches each day and task with a positive attitude and has proven to be a go-to member of the team.”

As a go-to team member, Wendy’s experience and interactions over the past three decades have equipped her with loads of advice for others looking to build a successful career…and to bring value to their day:

  • Never underestimate the importance of details and effective communication.
  • Always be a problem solver – don’t just stand by and observe; be willing to pitch-in and help when something needs to be done.
  • Be engaged in the day – pay attention to your job and department, but also the other departments that may affect your work, because we’re all connected.
  • The shop is our classroom – the more time you can spend in the plant, the more you’ll know and the better you’ll be at your job.

For 33 years (and counting), Wendy Gunter has followed this advice. And she continues to use it to bring value to her day…and everyone else’s.
