An influencer in the industry. Makes mentoring her mission. Takes networking to the next level.
Sonya Malvick, an outside sales representative for the state of Wisconsin, has worked in the metals industry for 25 years. Early in her career, she recognized that women are generally underrepresented in the industry, and she’s made it her mission to change that.
Sonya has cited the support she received from both men and women at Olympic Steel during her career. She says, “I was given support to strive for the impossible and push hard for what I wanted.” And, she’s paying it forward. Sonya works to give that same support to her colleagues and to others in the industry by contributing to programs and organizations focused on professional development, networking and career advancement for women.
In particular, Sonya has committed her time and talent to the Association of Women in the Metal Industries (AWMI), which she considers an excellent resource for both female and male steel industry professionals. AWMI programs and activities enhance member’s skills and experience, address challenges confronting the industry and promote members’ career growth. Sonya has been a very active member of this group and was recently named international president of AWMI for 2019 through 2020.
She is thrilled to take on this new role, where she can be even more influential in helping other women advance in the metals industry through succession planning, leadership training, communication and technology. She encourages women and men alike to learn more about AWMI, what the organization does and how to get involved locally by visiting www.awmi.org.
Also, it’s important to note that Olympic Steel became an AWMI Gold Corporate member this year. That means our employees receive reduced membership rates and discounts to attend events in their regions.
