Expanding Our Chicagoland Presence

In our business, getting too big for your building is a great problem to have. It means opportunity – and our new Bartlett, IL location is opening us up to more opportunities.

In case you missed the message in early June, we’ve grown – again! This time, we’re expanding our footprint in Illinois to support increasing demand out of Olympic Steel’s Schaumburg facility.

The Schaumburg operation offers carbon products with a focus on specialty metals (stainless steel and aluminum) products and processing. The facility provides cut-to-length, forming, shearing and laser burning services.

In June, Olympic Steel began moving Schaumburg’s fabrication equipment to a new 81,400 sq. ft. facility about 20 minutes away in Bartlett, IL. The new facility will support “value-added” manufacturing services. Newly available capacity in the Schaumburg facility will allow Olympic Steel to grow “first stage” cut-to-length processing out of that location.

Both facilities will remain part of Olympic Steel’s Specialty Metals business segment and continue to be led by Damon Wos, also General Manager for the Gary, IN location. Tapped to support the setup and lead the Bartlett facility’s operations, is Giovanny Martinez, promoted to Operations Manager in June. Chuck LaTour will continue as Operations Manager for the Schaumburg team.

Olympic Steel first established a physical presence in the Chicagoland area – a major metal-consuming and distribution market – in 1987 with the acquisition of Viking Steel Company, a stainless and aluminum distributor based in Elk Grove Village, IL. The Company then expanded from the original 48,000 sq. ft. Elk Grove Village facility to a second location in Schaumburg. Eventually, operations were consolidated to the Schaumburg building, which underwent an expansion in 2018 to 122,500 sq. ft. and the installation of a cut-to-length line for stainless steel processing. Today, with our expanded footprint and Chicago Tube & Iron facilities, Olympic Steel is a formidable presence in the region!
