Many years before recent social justice efforts were making headlines, Olympic Steel began its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) journey – a deep focus on building our Company culture. The early days of these efforts largely focused on how to attract, develop and retain more women into the metals industry, which has been historically male dominated.
Over time, this work has grown and expanded, though largely “behind the scenes” – understanding best practices in our industry and beyond, gathering professional recommendations and resources, collecting feedback to better understand the current state of our organization and beginning to provide training for our Leaders.
We’re learning. And, we’re taking the time to do it the right way, with a focus on sustainable change. Building an inclusive Company culture is an ongoing journey, one which we are navigating alongside many in our industry and our society as a whole.
Why are we paying attention to DEI?
It’s critical to our business. This is true for many reasons. We want varying and fresh perspectives that will fuel Olympic Steel’s growth. We also want to make sure we are attracting new employees from the broadest possible talent pool. It’s no secret that hiring is a major challenge facing most businesses. We need to ensure that Olympic Steel is a welcoming environment where a diverse mix of qualified candidates can find opportunities and add value to our organization.
This is work that will benefit everyone by continuing to enhance our culture and help attract talented candidates with new ideas who will fill critical openings on our teams and offer fresh perspective on how we can continue to grow safely, sustainably and profitably – in ways that benefits us all.

Olympic Steel’s DEI Council (pictures above), formed in 2021, spent time organizing these action items into a strategy, focused on 5 key pillars, that will span the next several years.
