Tyler Gilroy

Account Specialist, Chicago Tube & Iron, Locust, NC

Develops clear goals. Believes feedback is essential. Motivated to take the lead.

Tyler Gilroy graduated from North Carolina State University and immediately began working in the steel industry for a steel distribution company in the Atlanta area. In 2016, Tyler moved back to North Carolina and, in 2017, began working for Chicago Tube & Iron’s Locust, NC branch as an Account Representative. After a few years, he was promoted to a hybrid sales role, Account Specialist, that handled inside and outside sales.

Tyler aspires to lead operations or a division someday and he’s taking deliberate actions that are helping him work toward achieving that goal. First, Tyler has taken advantage of opportunities to meet with his mentor, asking questions that will help guide him in his career. He’s also partnered with employees from other CTI locations to develop plans for business projects.

Second, Tyler tackles the challenges he faces, personally and professionally, by breaking down the challenge into smaller, manageable tasks. This helps him understand the scope of the project and keeps him from getting overwhelmed. Then, he makes a plan for what needs to get done.

Joe Baucom, Locust General Manager and Tyler’s mentor, says, “Tyler is highly engaged in his work and does whatever it takes to get the job done. He is dedicated to his customers, the company and his fellow employees – handling his extensive workload with dignity, accountability and a positive attitude that reverberates through the organization.”

While Tyler has accomplished a lot and is looking forward to accomplishing even more on his journey toward achieving his professional goals, he credits and thanks the people he has worked with every step of the way. He says, “Some days can be difficult, but it’s the people I work with who make me happy to come to work each day.”

Finally, and this is his advice for others who may want to build a great career at Olympic Steel and Chicago Tube & Iron: “Ask questions, participate in meetings, take time to learn as much as you can – about products, the people and the business. And ask for feedback and give feedback.”
